How to Go to Sheung Luk Stream, Hong Kong | (A Step-by-Step Guide)

Sheung Luk Stream, located in Sai Kung, is one of Hong Kong’s most scenic and adventurous natural attractions. With turquoise pools, cascading waterfalls, and the famous 8-meter cliff jump, this hidden gem is a must-visit for hikers and thrill-seekers alike. If you’re wondering how to go to Sheung Luk Stream, this detailed guide will walk you through every step.

Step 1: Travel to Sai Kung Town

To begin your journey, make your way to Sai Kung Town, the gateway to many outdoor spots in the New Territories.

From MTR:

  • Take the MTR to Choi Hung Station (Kwun Tong Line).
  • Use Exit C2, then cross the pedestrian bridge to the minibus stop.
  • Take Minibus 1A directly to Sai Kung Town. The ride takes about 30–40 minutes.

Alternatively:

  • From Diamond Hill MTR, take Bus 92 which also stops at Sai Kung Town.

Step 2: Take a Taxi or Bus to Sai Wan Pavilion

Once you arrive at Sai Kung Town, you need to get to Sai Wan Pavilion, the starting point of the hike.

Options:

  • Take a green taxi from Sai Kung Town to Sai Wan Pavilion (approx. HK$100–120).
  • On weekends and holidays, look for the Hiking KMB Bus Route 29R, which goes directly to the pavilion.

Important Note: The road to Sai Wan Pavilion is narrow and winding. Minibuses or private vehicles are not allowed unless with a permit.

Step 3: Hike to Sheung Luk Stream

From Sai Wan Pavilion, the real adventure begins with a scenic hike.

Trail Info:

  • Distance: ~3.5 km
  • Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Follow the paved path downhill. Along the way, you'll see stunning views of High Island Reservoir and the surrounding Sai Kung East Country Park.

You’ll pass through Sai Wan Village, where you can grab drinks or snacks. From there, follow signs to Sai Wan Beach, then head inland along the stream to reach Sheung Luk Stream.

Step 4: Enjoy the Waterfalls and Pools

After reaching the stream, you’ll find natural rock pools and waterfalls. The most famous one is the jumping pool, where brave visitors leap from 8-meter-high rocks into the water.

Tips:

  • Wear water shoes or hiking sandals (rocks are slippery).
  • Be cautious when cliff jumping—check water depth and watch others first.
  • Avoid visiting after heavy rain due to slippery paths and strong currents.

Step 5: Return Journey

To head back, hike the same way to Sai Wan Pavilion and then take a taxi or bus to Sai Kung Town. From there, return via MTR or minibus to your starting point.

Final Tips for Visiting Sheung Luk Stream

  • Best time to visit: Spring and early autumn (avoid typhoon season).
  • What to bring: water, sunscreen, insect repellent, towel, waterproof bag.
  • Respect nature: Take all trash with you, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
